In Memoriam.....

May 30, 2016 by Cristina Smith

I'm known for my political posts, however, what many people don't know is that I'm extremely patriotic and love my country.  It is an every day way of life for me, where I actively avoid making purchases of items manufactured outside of the US, and I actively support our troops by other means.  I have been thinking about our soldiers for the last couple of weeks.  Well actually it started back when our neighbor came up and thanked us for putting up our flag for Veterans day.  He was an Iraq war veteran, and was watching us from the mailbox as my father in law, an Army veteran, my husband, former Navy, and my son, (just a toddler) were all quite involved in it.  To me, it would only be natural to put out our flags.  But, what about that family that puts out their flag, in memory of a son, a daughter, a father, a brother, a sister, a mother, who didn't come home?

Every year for Memorial day we go upstate New York and everyone has their flags out, commemorating those fallen so that the world could be a better place.   However, while we were grilling and socializing, I can't help to feel for many of those parents who are mourning instead.

It is my hope to teach my son patriotism, and love for his country.  But, I mostly hope that he learns to respect the sacrifice that many have given so that the world could be a better place.  I have taught my eldest to learn the difference between agreeing with the reasons we go to war, and respecting the soldiers who volunteer to represent our country.  I can only pray that Charlie will also learn the same. when we light up our little memorial each year.  I plan to add some mini boots, a lamp post and a garden with a white picket fence with a flag pole.  This can be our project each year.
